This week our exercise will be delivered in the Zoom session on Tuesday night at 7pm.
You can see the recorded zoom session in the youtube below...
Here is an outline and some thoughts... I will record the zoom session and share it on the website so you can have the life drawing session whenever it suits you.
Jasmin will be dance/modelling for us live. I'm really looking forward to it... Life drawing has been fundamental to my life. It was the main form of art I made for 20 years. I will share my story on Tuesday night too...

Any materials you want to try
The first part of our session we will be drawing gestures, very fast & expressive poses.
The Gesture Exercise
Expressing the action of the whole figure
A very fast & continuous line
With lots of energy
The action & movement
The big movement
Make a mess
Let's have fun!
"Don't wonder how you are going to do it - Do it and wonder how you did it"
the movement of the shadows
The second half of our session we will have 5 and 10 minute poses where we will be drawing or painting the shapes of shadows without outlines...
Spotify Playlist to go with the video I hope you listen top the playlist while you draw with the video... I tried to match the timing... I believe that music is an important element! It helps engage our brain in a way that supports us to fully experience the drawing experience without as much internal chatter....
This is a piece of writing about the gesture exercise, written by my dear friend and inspirational artist, Shanti.
I am sharing it with you because she has managed to express something beyond words which might help you let go and experience gestures with more ease... and an understanding of why we do them and why I love them so much....
Gesture provides endless opportunities to experience your skills and to go beyond the thresholds, controls and limitations of the mind... to where creativity lives.
The many skills used in drawing are the tools which you will draw on when the creative force takes you... where it will.
Through gesture, you can feel the connectedness of your eye, hand, body, feelings, energy and what you are seeing and sensing You can explore a myriad of visual patterns and rhythms which flow through and around the model. You can know your ability to see instantly, accurately and simply as you see the model in many different ways... as line energy patterns, as simple shapes, as circles, squares, triangles, as pressures, stresses, actions, directions, weights, emotions, qualities... and to see within the centre of things... way beyond outlines and surfaces
Gesture begins to take you to new dimensions. without even realising it... you will find that you are seeing more and more... if you allow yourself to keep adventuring... and if you leave any concern for the outcome behind The initial encounter opens so many ways to see.
Then you can venture to the place where you are seeing the whole all at once. the essence of drawing life is to respond, see and draw... the essence of the life before you. The life you are drawing is much more than shapes It is not to be found in bits and pieces. the life and special essence of the person you are drawing is something which the mind cannot grasp However something within you CAN express it... and this part of you is not constrained by time por thought. Gesture gives you the opportunity to respond with your own life force... to the living energy of the model. It's like a spark igniting another spark. Although to start with, perhaps all you can see on your paper is the sparks flying...
Be encouraged that if you know how to let the sparks fly... you. are expressing the magic ingredient onto your paper and it's only a matter of time (if you continue to draw and explore the exercises of seeing) till your drawings will develop. Since you can never predict when "results" will arrive you may as well relax and have a good time!
Beyond the drawing skills you are exploring, and beyond seeing the whole at once... gesture can provoke the experience of a force beyond the controls of your mind... the exciting world of creativity... This world is unique to each person... and frequently brings a sense of entering the unknown... or perhaps feeling a burst of something beyond out control Relax !!! It's safe to simple relax into the experience... let the energies which flow... be released onto your paper... and feel the beautiful sensation of letting go and not knowing... and just enjoy the music, the model, yourself in abandon... forget everything as each moment you are simply present... to the indescribable
Incase you are interested, I will be in the Art of Flow at home FB on Wednesday at 11am for 30 mins, intuitively painting a big canvas.
